Youth race secretary annual report October 2022

6th October 2022 AGM.

Introduction:

Not sure where to start with this seasons Youth Race Secretary report, there has been so much great youth racing that I couldn’t possibly fit it all in and as this is my first year being the Youth Race Secretary, I’m not 100% on the format, but here goes.

Our riders have been competing on the Track, Cyclocross, Circuit racing, Hill Climbs, Individual Time Trials, Team Time Trails and even in the Southern MTB league.

I have listed a few of the key moments from the season.

National Hill Climb

One of our youth riders Rianna Mahoney qualified for the nation hill climb championship which took place in October 2021 at Winnats Pass, Peak District. Rianna completed the climb in a very respectable time of 06:05.9 finishing 6th out of the 7 Junior/Juvenile girls and having the quickest time for her age category.

Cyclocross

Rianna started her CX season in September despite being adamant that she was not racing CX this season! She went on to race in the London & SE Cyclocross League, three of the Cyclocross National Trophy races (Falkirk, Cyclopark & Skipton) and qualified for the Cyclocross National Championships (Ardingly, Sussex).

·         Rianna finished 7th overall in the league and had her best result of the season in the last race taking 2nd.

·         In the National Trophy Rianna went from a 30+ gridding in her first race and showed continued improvement to achieve a best finish of 17th in her final race.

·         In the National Champs Rianna braved torrential rain and raced on a very technical and heavy course. Despite the conditions Rianna persevered and finished an admirable 21st.

Go-Ride racing league

Go-Ride Racing League is an entry level 'Go-Ride' children's cycle races in South London. This season we had a total of 6 of the Woolwich Youth riders taking part. There are two riders which I think need special mention:

·         India-Rose Osborne only joined us this season, with this being her first cycle race series to enter. Finishing the series in her age category of under 12 in first place.

·         Second rider to mention which I believe to be the youngest of our club members is Victoria De Beule, finishing 5th in the series for the under 8’s category.

Crystal Palace Crits

Woolwich CC had 3 of our youth riders take part in this series. With overall finishes of:

·         Edward Moore coming first overall for his age category of Under 16 boys

·         Emily Tanner finishing 5th overall for the under 16 girls

·         Rianna Mahoney finishing 4th in the series for the under 14 girls.

London Youth Games

Woolwich CC had a total of 14 riders taking part in this one day racing event, representing two local council boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley. In fact Woolwich CC coaches and members manage the Bexley team on behalf of the council. Stand out performances on the day:

·         Emily Tanner 2nd place in the individual Time Trial

·         Edward Moore 1st Place in the circuit race.

Spring In the Park (SITP) youth race series

In total we had 12 Woolwich CC youth riders take part in this race series in one form or another. This was an amazing achievement for the club, which helped the club to come joint first in the ‘Club Competition’ for the series (shared with Club Cyclopark & 4T+ Cyclopark). In this series we had some stand out results, namely:

·         Edward Moore coming 1st overall for his age category of Under 16 boys

·         Emily Tanner finishing 1st overall for the under 16 girls

·         Rianna Mahoney finishing 2nd in the series for the under 14 girls.

British Cycling South East Region Youth Race Series.

Woolwich CC had a total of 8 riders taking part in this series which comprised of 5 rounds of racing, spread over the summer months. This series was organised by local clubs within the region in conjunction with British Cycling and we the Woolwich were one of these clubs and organised an Individual Time Trial evening at Cyclopark and marshalled by our membership and parents of our youth riders.. Some of the standout performance of this series:

·         In the ‘Club Competition’ Woolwich CC came in 3rd overall for the series

·         Edward Moore coming 1st overall for his age category of Under 16 boys

·         Emily Tanner finishing 1st overall for the under 16 girls

·         Rianna Mahoney finishing 2nd in the series for the under 14 girls.

Tour of Scotland & National School Games

You might have noticed that Edward Moore has had some amazing performance throughout the season, and this hasn’t been missed by British Cycling. Edward was selected to represent the region and Woolwich CC in the Tour of Scotland and the National School Games, where he had some very respectable performances and results.

3up Team Time Trial

As a perfect close to our season, Woolwich CC put on and helped to organise the CTT 3up Team Time Trial in August, where we had a team of 3 youth girls representing the club and they did well, very well, so well in fact that they won first prize in the female category. Riders were:

·         Emily Tanner

·         Rianna Mahoney

·         Millie Atkinson

 Close:

I think we can all agree that this season has been an exceptional year with some real standout performances, so much so that Woolwich CC has a total of 140 national points, the most I think the Woolwich CC has ever had and of the 140 points 138 points were made up of just 3 youth riders (Emily Tanner, Rianna Mahoney & Edward Moore), the remaining 2 points was also from one of our youth riders (Luke Seagroatt).

Woolwich CC 7 53 40 71 79 95 8 70 0 56 140

As I am sure you all can understand that to achieve results such as we have had and to have as many of our youth rider’s competition didn’t just happen over the night, it has been years in the making.

Apologies if the next bit sounds like an ‘Oscar’ acceptance speech

I would personally like to thank all our club coaches and volunteers for all their help and support over the years and giving up their free time to organise and coach on our regular Saturday session, putting on some great Velodrome & Cyclopark days, organising & marshalling races for the riders to compete, Winter turbo sessions, road rides. The list goes on but thank you very much, it is greatly appreciated.

We can’t forget our youth riders and celebrate their continuous effects, dedication to practicing and training as well as having fun along the way. Chapeau!

We also can’t forget to mention the parents of all our riders, these are the real unsung heroes, as these are the ones that cart the riders to all these events all over the country and keep the riders motivated, dragging them out of bed for the early mornings starts and late evenings finishes, ensuring all the kit and bikes are ready, etc. Thank you!
