Jimmy Hayward was a non-finisher in a SERRL event due to a puncture. Jimmy is to be riding in the Smithfield Nocturne.
Marshals are urgently required for the SERRL at Tenterden – 8 o’clock at Woodchurch Scout Hall (why not take your bikes and ride in new surroundings after the event) Contact the Racing Secretary with your offer of assistance.
12-20 members are regularly signing on every Saturday morning.
The welfare officer has resigned so we need a new one.
The Club needs volunteers at Cyclopark on the 20th of June (6 people). Terry Blake is helping organise the 10 week series.
There was an open forum about club runs and after a vote it was decided that members meet at one time and at one place (8.45 in Bexley Village-departing sharp at 9:00am). Prior to departing there will be a discussion as to the route, split as well as proposed café stop; everyone will leave at the same time – 9 o’clock. The level, age & ability of riders will be assessed to choose the best grouping & route.
It was stated that the Club run is a very good way for members to get to know each other. Although it regularly falls to the same certain members to look after the more inexperienced riders on the run other members should also help out & help nurture the future of the Club? (Website needs to be adjusted to highlight the changes to the club run 8.45 for 9am start starting 6th July
Any other business;
13th July: is the Club track day & family picnic at Herne Hill.
19th July: Midsummer club ride 7 o’clock Bexley.
29th July: Is the Club’s commitment at Crystal Palace – we need at least 8 marshals. (6 o’clock for 6.30)
5th July: London Youth Games – 2 cycling teams, consisting mainly of Woolwich riders.
Death of Member: Alan Farrow, club member since the late 1940’s has sadly passed away.
Remarks from a family member of a club member.
I think I ought to draw your attention to the sterling work that Terry Blake (Club Coach) is doing at the Olympic Velopark Stratford.
Martin Messer’s (Club Coach) organisation is second to none but is not helped by the apathetic attitude of some clubs considering the apparent enthusiasm last year for clubs clamouring to use the Velopark
To see Terry's enthusiasm, and also patience in coaxing the best out of newcomers to the track is very uplifting.
Both Terry and Martin are great ambassadors for the club, and I personally have had unsolicited praise from members of Brixton Cycles and a member of VCL for the standard of coaching.
Four weeks ago club members Matt, Jack and Josh were first past the post in a 10 lap scratch, and last week Matt, Jono and Jack dominated the timed lap, which considering they were up against adult riders shows something of their ability, dedication and aptitude, some of the credit for which must go to Terry's influence.
I know from a personal point of view, that Jack would not be where he is today, if it were not for Terry pointing him the right direction to concentrate on the track
The Woolwich Cycle Club is very lucky to have both Terry and Martin on board and I trust that the remainder of the membership appreciate this.
