Welcome to the Woolwich Cycling Club Ladies' Area, and the Women
Ride Bikes Too ! Campaign
Cycling has traditionally been a male-orientated pastime - in fact, the
Woolwich CC was a men-only club until as recently as 2006, when a 121-year
tradition was ended. However, in recent years we have seen more and more ladies
taking part in cycling. So much so, that in this country we now have some great
female cyclists and successful champions in :
Victoria Pendleton (track)
Nicole Cooke (road)
Rebecca Romero (track)
Wendy Houvenaghel (track)
Emma Pooley (Road, TT)
Shanaze Reade (BMX)
On top of that, cycle equipment and clothing manufacturers are now
producing women-specific items in abundance, such is the interest being
generated by the popularity of cycling and the success of our GB cycling
athletes.
In 2008, the Woolwich CC started its Ladies Day rides once a
month. Ladies were thin on the ground at first, but interest is slowly growing
and for 2009 we hope to offer a range of scheduled rides and days out for all
abilities, based on different themes and places. We will be running an
Instructor-led beginners' ride once a month to give a taste of cycling with a
group and on the road and to provide information and support for anyone new to
cycling, male or female.
Members of the club are always happy to give advice on all
aspects of cycling from clothing and accessories, to bikes and riding positions
and places to ride. All activities are free and there are no obligations. So
for what ever reason you want to access cycling, the Woolwich CC has something
to offer, be it sport, fitness, leisure, commuting, fun, or just to keep up
with the grandchildren.
